Ken’s Big Adventure
Once upon a time there was a man small in stature but large in spirit. The jovial man truly admired people who with a great deal of imagination, their bare hands and some tools, magically created something out of nothing, He knew that if he researched the tools they needed and took them to them, the people could spend their time imagining and creating. So he loaded the tools in the back of his little green Willy’s panel truck and drove to the people. Soon the people needed more tools than he could fit in his little green truck so he had to move to a small store with large windows on Market Street, then to a little larger store with small windows in Magnolia Center, to the first, second, third and connecting fourth building at 1643 W. La Cadena Drive. La Cadena was home to this man’s passion for fifty-one years. He was happy there and everyone’s car knew exactly how to find him. Life was good and he never had to see the wolf in Cal Trans clothing that eventually came to blow his beloved building down. Later, as his family continued his passion, the howling packs surrounded the building, finally leveling it to the ground.
Time was short and there wasn’t another building that was quite the right fit. Room was needed for the million and a half dollars of inventory, the band saw welder and repair shop had special electrical considerations and the showroom required additional parking spaces to fulfill city codes. Existing buildings for manufacturing didn’t have enough parking or loading docks and those for distribution had loading docks but no storefronts. So it was decided to move into a temporary location whose address was on Iowa but faced Marlborough while we built a new home, the address of which is on Marlborough but faces Chicago. While the original moving notification and map did say we would be at 1751 Marlborough in the spring of 2004 we were maybe a little off… Fine, by a year and two seasons.
Yes later that we anticipated, we moved into our new facility, complete with heat, air conditioning, lights, smiling faces and helping hands. We hope you will enjoy a morning treat and a cup of coffee with us while touring the new showroom. Looking at our resource boards, or looking through some of the 350 manufacturers’ catalogs which we both stock and represent. Whatever your fancy, know that these resources, as well as the comfortable couches, will be available to you during the short time until your number is called. We do love to see you, but if you don’t have time to stop in between 5:30AM and 4:30PM remember we do deliver locally twice a day and ship UPS every afternoon, for those of you who are far away. As always, you can call in orders up to 4:30PM for delivery the next morning.
